Angus "Skip" Leask

Angus P. “Skip” Leask, 83 of Gaylord, died at home on Monday evening, April 28, 2014. Born in Cheboygan, Skip was the son of Thomas and Adelaide (McCoy). At age 17, Skip enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. After returning to Cheboygan, Skip worked for Borden Ice Cream. On August 6, 1951 he was married to Velma Laurence. They lived in Cheboygan until moving to Gaylord in 1963 with Borden, which became Purchase Sales in 1972. During his career with Borden and Purchase Sales, Skip worked as a truck driver, warehouse manager and later in the office, until his retirement in 1993. He was preceded in death by his wife Velma in 1981. Skip would later marry again, to the former Betty Sturtevant on May 4, 1985. Betty preceded him in death on March 28, 1998. Skip enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and woodworker, he enjoyed gardening, visiting casinos and feeding and watching birds. He had made it a point to reunite with several of the men he had served with in the Army and he enjoyed those friendships. He was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. In addition to both Velma and Betty, he was preceded in death by his parents, his youngest daughter, Lori Ann Myers in 2010; sisters, Lee, Joan, Wanda “Teeny”, Dorothy and Grace and a brother, Jack. Skip is survived by his children, Julie (Tim) Wells of Johannesburg, David (Phyllis) Leask of Gaylord, Karen (George) Saddler of Gaylord and Mary (Raymond Owen) Duncan of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Luke, Chad, Timothy, Mindy, Desirae, Joshua, Kelly, Shannon, Sara Beth, Crystal, Chelsea, Kaylee, Nathan and Samuel and 13 great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Monica (Dag) Vallance of Davison, Gerry (Timothy) Bussler and Judy (Fred) Maxwell of Cheboygan; a brother, Orville (Lorraine) Leask of Cheboygan and several nieces and nephews. Skip’s family will visit with friends from 4:00-8:00 PM on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Gaylord Community Funeral Home, 850 North Center Avenue where services will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 11:00 AM. A luncheon will follow the service and interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery with military honors. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan.
