Arthur “Art or Butch” Butcher, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, at Munson Medical Center after a long struggle with illness. He was 75 years old. Born on March 22, 1950, in Highland Park, MI, Art was the second child of Donald and Edythe Butcher. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Gaylord, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Art was a proud graduate of Gaylord High School, class of 1968, and went on to pursue his passion for aviation engineering at Western Michigan University, graduating in 1972. On January 30, 1971, he married his lifelong love, Joyce (Johnson) Butcher. Together, they built a warm and nurturing home in Gaylord, where Art ran the family business, Don’s Sport and Marine, until his retirement.
A dedicated aviator, Art secured his pilot’s license before he even had his driver’s license, a testament to his deep passion for flying. He was actively involved in the community, contributing his time and energy to organizations such as the Jaycees, Rotary Club, ALPS, and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). He proudly helped establish the Otsego County Splash In, a cherished local event. Art’s love for flying extended beyond conventional aircraft; he delighted in building and piloting RC planes as well as indulging in the great outdoors through hunting and fishing.
Art’s legacy lives on in his wife, Joyce (Johnson) Butcher; three children, Wendy, Brian (Karen), and Jeff; four granddaughters, Kaylee, Kaytlyn, Hannah, and Madison; his sister, Donna (Butcher) King.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Edythe Butcher; his in-laws, Henry and Sylvia (Thorpe) Johnson, and his brother-in-law Robert “Bob” King.
Art was not only a loving family man but also a gentle soul known for his sense of humor and cheerful disposition. He faced life's challenges with unwavering courage, including a kidney transplant from Joyce on their 25th wedding anniversary, an act that underscored the deep bond they shared. A lifelong Methodist, his faith and family remained the centerpieces of his life.
In this time of sadness, may we remember Art as a man who exemplified love, kindness, and resilience—a true inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
