Barbara Jean Swank, 78, passed away on January 21, 2026, in Elmira, Michigan. She was born on November 23, 1947, in Vanderbilt, MI, and spent her formative years surrounded by the natural beauty of her hometown.
Barbara's life was a tapestry woven with love, dedication, and a relentless spirit. After working for Boyne Mountain from 1964 to 1967, Barbara bravely transitioned into the role of a stay-at-home mom, where she became what she fondly referred to as a "general engineer" in her household. Her greatest pride and joy came from nurturing and raising her four children, instilling in them the values of hard work, compassion, and the importance of family bonds.
In 1966, Barbara married the love of her life, Darwin, and moved to Mt. Morris to support her husband's career at General Motors. The couple faced life's challenges together, and despite the hurdles, Barbara's strength shone brightly through her deep love for her family. Her devotion extended beyond her immediate family, as she lovingly cared for her son, Bobby, who faced the trials of muscular dystrophy until his passing in 2000.
Barbara was an avid reader, gifted in crocheting, gardening, canning, and sewing. Each of these pursuits allowed her to express her creativity and share her love with those around her. Barbara's garden flourished under her care, just as her love for her family did.
Moving to the Swank Family Farm in 2002 was a dream come true for Barbara, as she embraced her surroundings and the rural lifestyle that nourished her soul. Known as a people person, she made connections effortlessly and formed bonds with anyone she met. Barbara had an innate ability to strike up a conversation, sharing warmth and smiles with all she encountered.
Above all else, Barbara cherished her grandchildren and her great-grandson, who brought immense happiness to her life. She poured her love into their lives, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Darwin; three children, Darwin Swank and Fiancée Terina Kelley, Debra (David) Perez, and Jimmy Swank (David Wysocki); grandchildren, Veronica and Victoria Perez and Brandon Congdon; great-grandson, Zachary Aguilar Jr.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Earl Swank; her sister, Doris Ann Hamlin; and her parents, Clark and Veleta (Montgomery) Wright.
A graveside service will take place in the spring at Maple Hill Cemetery in Elmira.
