David Ernst Ott

David Ernst Ott passed away on March 3, 2026 after bravely battling two rare conditions for the last six years (primary progressive apraxia of speech and corticobasal syndrome). He was 78 years old. David was a loving husband to Deborah; a proud father to Brian (Lauren), Stephen (Sarah), and Justin (Melinda); and a joyful grandfather to Aubrey, Madelyn, Barnes, Kirby, Gustav, Oliver, and step-grandchildren Isaiah and Malaina. David grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, with his parents, Ernst and Shirley Ott, and his siblings, Susan and Richard.

In his younger years, David learned to be a proficient golfer and a stellar ping-pong, card, and billiards player. An Eastern Michigan University graduate, David launched a successful 40-year career in retail and entrepreneurship. This career led their family to move to Ohio, then Michigan, and ultimately to Indiana, where they settled down until retirement on Torch Lake in Michigan. David and Debbie enjoyed a loving 48-year marriage, enjoying travel, going to the movies, working in the yard or on home improvement projects, and spending time with family and friends. Since moving to Michigan, David enjoyed participating in several golf leagues, where he formed incredible friendships that he cherished until the end.

Not only was David a respected leader and manager of hundreds of employees, but he was also a beloved husband and father at home. David taught his sons many life skills they carry today: home maintenance and construction, golf, public speaking, and a love of University of Michigan sports (sorry, Mom). He provided each son with the opportunities and guidance to become successful professionals in their respective fields. Throughout his life, David carried himself with dignity and confidence, and he will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernst and Shirley Ott; his in-laws, Gerrit and Virginia Wierda; and his sister, Susan.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer of 2026.
