David G. Sides, Sr.

Jan 22, 1969 — Oct 27, 2026

Vanderbilt

David Garner Sides Sr., 57, of Vanderbilt, passed away surrounded by the love of his family and friends at the Gaylord home of his daughter, Tishia.

Born and raised in Vanderbilt, David spent nearly his entire life in the community he was proud to call home. He had a deep love for the little town, the surrounding woods, the Pigeon River, and most importantly, the people who made it so special. Vanderbilt wasn't just where David lived; it was part of who he was.

David attended St. Mary's schools, graduating in 1987, and grew up in the Catholic Church. One of four siblings, he learned early in life the importance of family, something he carried with him throughout his years.

A hardworking man through and through, David spent his career in masonry and also enjoyed lumber work, both as a side job and a hobby. He was never afraid of hard work, getting his hands dirty, or finding a creative way to get something done. He had a natural ability to think outside the box, often coming up with ideas and solutions that were uniquely his own.

But there was so much more to David than his strong work ethic. He loved the simple things in life: camping, fishing, being outdoors, listening to music, and playing his guitar. Some of his happiest moments were spent surrounded by family and friends, sharing stories, laughter, and making memories. His children and grandchildren held an especially important place in his heart.

David had a personality that was hard to forget. Known for his quick wit, sense of humor, creativity, and storytelling, he could turn an ordinary moment into one worth remembering. He loved a good laugh, had a story for just about everything, and wasn't afraid to tell it like it was. He was genuine, one of a kind, and unapologetically himself.

Above all else, David was a devoted dad, a proud grandpa, and, as those closest to him would say, a kick-ass friend. He was the kind of guy you could count on, laugh with, and make memories with that would last a lifetime. He didn't need anything fancy to enjoy life. Good company, the outdoors, some music, and the people he loved were more than enough.

While his passing leaves an emptiness in the hearts of so many, David leaves behind something far greater: a lifetime of stories, unforgettable memories, laughter, and love. His hardworking hands may now be at rest, but the mark he left on the people who knew and loved him will remain for years to come.

David is survived by his mother, Patricia (Dipzinski) Sides of Vanderbilt; his four children, Emily Sides of Marquette, Tishia (Matt) Copenhaver, David Sides Jr and Tanner Sides, all of Gaylord; his brother, Craig Sr. (Cindy) Sides of Indian River; his sister, Lorena (Kyle) Payton of Vanderbilt; and his special grandchildren, Travis Copenhaver, Elora Sides and Carter Copenhaver.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Sides Jr.; his brother, Steven Sides; and his sister-in-law, Christine (Borowiak) Sides.

A Celebration of Life gathering will take place on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at the Livingston Township Hall, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A special time of sharing memories and stories will begin at 5:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family, through Tishia Copenhaver. At a later date, these funds will be used toward something that was near and dear to David's heart, creating a meaningful way to honor his memory.

The family kindly encourages everyone to come dressed casually, just as David would have wanted. No need to dress up or be fancy. Simply come as you are, share a story, have a laugh, and celebrate a man who meant so much to so many.

Please share your memories and personal messages with the family in his guestbook below.
