Dennis Bruce Crabill, a beloved member of the Gaylord community, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 29, 2026. He was 78.
Born on April 26, 1947, in Findlay, Ohio, Dennis, known affectionately as Denny, was the son of Paul and Eleanor Crabill. Denny had a lifelong passion for music which began as a child when he took accordion lessons, planting the seeds of a creative path that would follow him throughout his life. In high school, Denny and several friends formed a band called The Majestics, an early expression of the creativity and camaraderie that would define much of his life. The group went on to become a lasting and beloved presence in Ohio's music scene, performing together for more than six decades and continuing until the present day. Denny played with the band during its early years and on occasion thereafter. After graduating from high school, Denny proudly served in the United States Navy as a musician and later served for a time in the National Guard. His primary instrument was the tenor saxophone, though he played several others over the years.
As a child, Denny vacationed in northern Michigan with his family and carried a lifelong certainty that he would someday make it his home. As an adult, he found a spiritual home at Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat, and in the mid-1980's he moved permanently to the Gaylord area to live closer to the community he loved.
Denny worked in various management roles in the customer service field, primarily in the restaurant and nutrition retail industries. He dedicated over twenty years to JoJo's Natural Market, where his deep knowledge of health and nutrition-paired with warmth, humor, and approachability--positively impacted countless individuals and made him a trusted and familiar presence in the community.
Creative by nature, Denny had a keen eye for beauty and harmony in physical spaces. Wherever he lived or worked, he took pride in shaping interiors that felt welcoming, intentional, and full of character.
A self-taught chef, Denny served for many years at Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat, including a decade as chef and manager. In addition to nourishing the community through his cooking, he shared his musical talents there as well, playing instruments and contributing to the creative and spiritual life of the retreat. His warmth, humor, and steady presence left a lasting mark on all who spent time with him.
Music remained a constant joy throughout Denny's life. He was an active member of the Gaylord Community Band, continuing a passion that had begun in childhood and carried through his Navy service and beyond. He cherished nature, and most especially trees, a love rooted in his college studies in Forestry. That passion found lasting expression on the five-acre homestead he shared with his partner, Carrie, where he lovingly planted and tended more than fifty trees and bushes.
Above all else, Denny was known for his love of conversation and connection. He was deeply social, endlessly curious, quick to laugh, and generous with encouragement. His storytelling and humor brought people together, and his wonderfully unique, free-spirited way of being made him unforgettable to those who knew him.
Denny is survived by his partner, Carrie Smith; his brother, Steve (Rosemary) Crabill; sisters, Karen Crabill and Diane Blevins; nephews, Andrew, Brian, and Connor; nieces, Caitlin (Spencer) and Kira; grand-niece Avery; many cousins and other relatives, along with many dear friends from all walks of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Eleanor Crabill, and nephew Kyle.
A memorial service for Denny will be held at Song of the Morning Yoga and Meditation Retreat in Vanderbilt, Michigan, on Sunday, May 3, at 12:30 p.m., following the community’s regular 11:00 a.m. service. All are welcome to attend.
