Dorothy A. Kuhn

Dorothy Ann Kuhn, 98 of Petoskey, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

"Dottie" was born in Flint, Michigan in 1928, the youngest of four daughters to her parents, Gladys and Harvey Emens. Her school years were spent in Flint with her sisters (all predeceased), Elizabeth, Evelyn and Violet along with her parents . After graduating from high school she attended and graduated from a two year technical school, then worked for the phone company. Shortly after WWII, she met and married George Thomas Kuhn (Tom, predeceased). They settled in Anderson, Indiana, going on to have three children, Jeffrey (predeceased), Vicki and Tim.

In Anderson, Dottie became involved in the YWCA, becoming the Aquatics Director, running and teaching the swimming, lifesaving and water safety programs. She was an active devoted member of the Christian Science church throughout her life, several times serving as First Reader, and other positions in the church. Family travel, camping, boating and gardening were key recreational activities. Dancing remained a love throughout her life, including her time square and round dancing with the Petoskey Whirlaways. In 1965, the family moved to West Bloomfield, Michigan. There, she was active in church and learned to ski with family trips to northern Michigan. She and Tom bought a cottage on Walloon Lake, which became a frequent vacation destination both summer and winter. Eventually, she and Tom modified a cottage on the North Arm into a home, where they settled. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends on the lake and as a senior learned to sail and windsurf. She and Tom also had a winter home in Sun City Center, Florida where she participated in dancing, synchronized swimming, painting and gardening.

She dearly loved her friends in both Sun City Center and Petoskey. Dottie and Tom wintered in Sun City Center and traveled back to the north year after year. In 2015, after 61 years of marriage, Tom passed, but Dottie continued to travel back and forth enjoying an active lifestyle with church, swimming, boating and gardening and entertaining well into her 90's. She was an inspiration to all that knew her in her active lifestyle right up to her passing.

She is survived by her children, Vicki (Michael) and Tim (Cindie), five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, September 5, 2026, in Petoskey, MI at her lake home. Donations in her honor can be made to the Christian Science Society of Petoskey or Hospice of Michigan.
