Eileen Patricia Vogt (Devitt) was born in Detroit on September 22, 1931. She was a first-generation American, the daughter of Irish immigrants Michael and Margaret Devitt. Throughout her life she maintained a steadfast pride in her Irish heritage combined with deeply patriotic devotion to the United States. Not surprisingly, two of her favorite holidays were St. Patrick’s Day and the Fourth of July. Eileen was raised, along with her two brothers, Thomas and Joseph, in a modest home on Fernhill Street blocks away from the old State Fairground in Detroit.
In 1953, Eileen married Richard Vogt and moved to his hometown of Berkley, Michigan. There they purchased a home and raised two children, Timothy and Susan. When the children grew more independent, Eileen took a position at Michigan Bank, where she worked in the accounting department until her retirement. Every summer the family vacationed at Little Wolf Lake in Lewiston, at first camping at the state park, and in later years renting a cabin at Little Wolf Lake Resort. Eileen and Richard eventually purchased property on the lake and Eileen relocated permanently to the lake house in 2003.
Eileen was a devout Catholic and her local parish was always at the center of her spiritual and social life. Eileen grew up in St. Benedict parish in Detroit, graduating from their high school in 1949. Eileen kept many high school friendships alive through her work with the St. Benedict Alumni Association. True to her school, she even played a key role in organizing her 50th high school class reunion. During her Berkley years, her parish was Our Lady of Lasalette, where she
was a tireless volunteer for the church and its school. Her attachment to Lasalette was unwavering and she regularly journeyed back to Berkley, even after she relocated to Lewiston, to help out at church functions, visit old friends, and spend time with the Devitt clan in Berkley and Royal Oak.
Eileen found a spiritual home, and another avenue for volunteerism, at St. Francis in Lewiston. As she did at St. Benedict and Lasalette, Eileen devoted hours of time volunteering at St. Francis church, where she also found an enduring circle of friends. Eileen loved a good time: she celebrated all holidays, and she delighted in sending cards and small gifts to friends and family. She was undoubtedly one of Hallmark’s best customers. She was also a huge football fan: the Lions of course, Michigan State, and even our local team, the Cardinals. Eileen loved to get the party started. Even into her nineties she would hit the dance floor encouraging others to get up and enjoy life.
Eileen died peacefully on November 25, 2025, at the age of 94. She is survived by her brother Joseph, her children Timothy and Susan, her daughter-in-law Kate, her two grandsons Daniel Vogt and Kyle Robbins, her sisters-in-law Jean Vogt and Mary Devitt, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 PM Thursday, December 4, 2025, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Lewiston, where the family will visit with friends beginning at 11:00 AM.
