Elsa J. Freeman

Elsa Jean Freeman took her last breath on earth and her first breath in Heaven on September 27, 2025, at the age of 104 in Gaylord, Michigan. Born on January 10, 1921, in New Haven Township, Michigan, Elsa's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, faith, dedication, and unwavering spirit.

As a proud homemaker, she devoted herself to raising her three cherished children while also managing a home daycare, creating a loving environment that fostered growth and learning for countless little ones. Elsa’s commitment to family was the cornerstone of her life, and her proudest accomplishments revolved around the love she nurtured within her Christian home.

With roots deeply planted in faith, Elsa was baptized by her son, Denny. Her Catholic upbringing shaped her values, which she lived by every day. A shining example of resilience and devotion, Elsa dedicated over 70 years to serving as a big supporter of the VFW Auxiliary, holding every office with grace and commitment.

Elsa's life was enriched not only by her family but also by her diverse interests and hobbies. She was an avid bingo player, crocheting with remarkable creativity, and pursued golf and card games with a competitive spirit that brought joy to those around her. Her playful nature and determination to win endeared her to friends and family alike, creating memories that will be cherished forever.

Elsa's journey on this earth culminated in a peaceful transition to heaven, where she is now home with our Lord and Savior. As we remember Elsa, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering faith. Her legacy as a devoted mother and fierce community supporter will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know her.

She is survived by her three children, Dennis (Sandy) Freeman of Gaylord, Carol (Dave) Crawford of Beaver Dam, WI; Nancy (Bill) Main of West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Laurie (Ferd) Salvacion, Tim (Sarah) Freeman, Tom (Theresa) Freeman, Paul (Heather) Freeman, Sarah (Robert) Ward, Jessica Freeman, David (Julie) Crawford, Amy Coughlin, Paul (Ana Laborde) Schlaack, Megan (Marcelo) Silva and Charles (Brittney Barrett) Schlaack; 22 great-grandchildren, 34 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Agnes (Malik) Polasek; her husband, Wayne Henry Freeman who passed on January 3, 2005; her brother, Anthony Polasek; and her two sisters, Rose Hovanec and Stacy Malik.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place 10:00 AM Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Gaylord Family Fellowship Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassus Hospice, 1723 West M32, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Elsa's heart was wide open to those who cared for her, especially during her later years. She deeply appreciated the staff at The Brook in Gaylord, whose compassionate care provided comfort and companionship. Their unwavering support, coupled with the incredible caregivers from Compassus Hospice, allowed Elsa to live out her days with dignity and grace. A special mention must be made of Theresa Freeman, her granddaughter, whose impeccable and intentional care exemplified a profound love and respect for her grandmother. Together, they forged a bond that transcended the typical familial relationship, reflecting a relationship built on mutual admiration and affection.
