Joel D. Quay

Joel David Quay passed away unexpectedly on January 28, 2026, at the age of 40. He spent his final waking moments enjoying one of his greatest passions, snowmobiling in beautiful Northern Michigan.

Joel was a beloved son, grandson, spouse, stepdad, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. His presence brightened every room, and his kindness made people feel truly seen and valued. He never met a stranger or a PBR he didn’t like.

Joel is survived by his wife, Ann Quay, and her two children, Emily and Andrew Greif; his mother, Sherri O’Neill, and her husband, Bill O’Neill, and their daughters, Kayla (David Owens) and Ali (Matt Fort); his father, Arnie Quay; and his maternal grandmother, Joanie Sietsema.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joann and Dale Quay, and by his maternal grandfather and hero, Joel Sietsema.

Joel was born and raised in Gaylord, Michigan, graduating with the Gaylord High School Class of 2004. He was deeply proud to call Gaylord home and to be part of a family legacy rooted there. He spent much of his time creating in his kitchen, building in his garage, and exploring the landscapes he loved so much. An avid chef, boater, golfer, snowmobiler, and so much more - Joel was always ready to show up for his people and lend a hand to anyone who needed it.

Joel married the love of his life, Ann Marie, on March 25, 2017. From playing cribbage at their kitchen table to soaking up the sun on their boat, their days together overflowed with laughter, love, and joy. In true Joel fashion, his last words to Ann were, “I’m not here for a long time, I’m here for a good time.” And a good time he had.

A celebration of life gathering will take place from 12:00 to 3:00 PM Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
