John "Jack" Austin

John Leo “Jack” Austin, 89, of Gaylord, Michigan, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, creativity, and dedication to family. Born October 3, 1935, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jack’s life was rich with love, laughter, and deep commitment to those he held dear. His story began with a chance meeting while raising funds for a church’s stained-glass window—a moment that led him to Carrol Lemke, the love of his life. The two married on May 30, 1959, at St. Joseph Church in Racine, Wisconsin, beginning a marriage that would span nearly 66 years.

Jack and Carrol made their home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Jack founded the Austin Diamond Company near the University of Michigan. Known fondly as "Diamond Jack," he became a respected jeweler with over 35 years in the business, earning a reputation for excellence, innovation, craftsmanship and charm. He held several jewelry patents and was sought after by both professional and college athletes for engagement rings and custom pieces.

After 19 years in Ann Arbor the couple moved to Gaylord, Michigan where they would raise their three children—John (Molly), Scott, and Amy. Nestled among mature trees Jack designed and built a cedar log home. The log home reflected Jack's deep reverence for nature, wildlife, and the peace of the northern woods. There, he embraced the serenity of the woods, finding joy in fishing, wildlife, and the beauty of nature. He enjoyed his log home so much that he would also go on to sell custom log cabins for others to enjoy at Otsego Log Homes for years.

Jack was a devoted family man and love for his family was the center of his world. He was immensely proud of his children—John, a successful dentist; Scott, works at Choice Publications; and Amy, who works in the international wind industry —and adored his granddaughters, Claire and Catherine. Known for his extraverted personality, he brought joy and humor wherever he went. Jack’s presence lit up every room. Sundays at the Austin home were often filled with the sound of classical music, John Denver ballads, the rustling of newspapers and hilarious dinner conversations. He had an intense love for art and science, and often shared his thoughts and findings with family and friends. Jack held a deep appreciation for comedy movies and was a passionate fan of every Michigan sports team, cheering on U of M football, the Lions, Red Wings, and Tigers with unwavering loyalty. He took great joy in watching his children compete in sports at St. Mary's, whether it was basketball, football, softball, cheerleading or track.

With his big personality, kind heart, and unforgettable sense of humor, Jack leaves behind a profound imprint on everyone who knew him. Jack will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

The family will remember him privately and no formal services are planned at this time.
