John Ellis Traylor, who devoted his life to serving others, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, at his home in Gaylord, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 6, 1944, in Mancelona, the son of Joseph and Mary (Paul) Traylor.
On December 21, 1974, John married the love of his life, Jan Swadling, at Burt Lake Christian Church. They built a beautiful life together, raising two daughters and one son, creating a legacy that will last a lifetime. John was a steadfast presence in his family and an extraordinary individual who dedicated himself to helping physically and mentally disabled adults at the Alpine Center in Gaylord, as well as continuing similar work with students at the Gaylord Community Schools.
John was not just a man of service but also a devoted family man. His greatest pride came from his wife, his children, and his grandchildren. He was a beacon of support and encouragement, always following his kids and grandchildren throughout their various sports endeavors. His deep love for his family was evident in everything he did, always in the background, with qualities such as patience, selflessness, quiet and thoughtful.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, John was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed various hobbies including hunting, gardening, and playing cards—especially poker and cribbage. He often spent his leisure time golfing and attending kids' sporting events, relishing the moments spent in the company of his loved ones.
John faced his later years with admirable strength as he battled Parkinson's disease for many years, demonstrating the same resilience he exhibited throughout his life. His passing marks the end of an era, yet the impact he made, and the memories shared will forever resonate among those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jan. Also surviving are their three children, Emily (Matt) Dobrzelewski, Luke (Katy) Traylor and Katy (Braden) Traylor; eight dear grandchildren, Lela (Drew Parker), Ruby (Tyler Ashley), Isabel, Miles, Zenden, Reid, Emerson and Addy Kay; six siblings, Betty Kevwitch, Joe (Ann) Traylor, Joann (Al) Pulaski, Carol (Don) Arlt, Loretta (Grant) Sheets, Vivian (Ernie) Gutzka; in-laws, Ken (Sylvia) Swadling, Jerry (Barb) Swadling, Sue (Jim) Michalishyn and MaryJo (Dale) Majerczyk; and many nieces and nephews. Their presence in his life was a source of immense joy and pride for John. He is also survived by a daughter, Christy Daniels, and her son, Bradley Ham.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Phyllis Gardner; brothers-in-law, Rich Gardner and Terry Kevwitch; mother and father-in-law, Albert and Emily Swadling.
John leaves behind a legacy of compassion, love, and unwavering devotion to his family. His memory will remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
