Kathy Anne Hornbeck

Kathy Anne Hornbeck, 66 of Gaylord, passed away Monday, April 6, 2020 at her son’s home in Petoskey, eight days after the death of her beloved husband, Jon Leroy Hornbeck.

Born on April 13, 1953 in Kalamazoo, she was the daughter of William and Beverly (Astle) Madden.  She graduated from Loy Norrix High School in 1971.

After graduating high school, Kathy became a nurse. Her first nursing job was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Bronson Hospital and she spent the rest of her nursing career at Bronson and Borgess Hospitals in Kalamazoo. She was one of the best patient advocates and a mentor for many. Nursing was her passion. She was a kind, caring, nurturing soul that believed in putting others first, and spread kindness and happiness wherever she went. She was joyful, positive and a guiding light for many. Her smile would light up any room and her blue eyes sparkled.

Kathy was married to the love of her life, Jon Leroy Hornbeck for 38 years until his death on March 29, 2020.  Also surviving are her two sons and their families, Sean (Tiffany) Hornbeck and Michael (Andrea) Hornbeck; and her grandchildren, Own, Max and Eli.  Also surviving are her siblings Daniel Madden, David (Laura) Madden, and Nancy (Franklin) Sebastian; a brother-in-law, Tim Andrews; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Mary Andrews, her older sister.

Family was her greatest love. Kathy enjoyed being by Jon’s side through life. Working on the property, riding motorcycles, fishing, golfing and many endless adventures of “Jonny World” would keep her busy. She supported her boys on their many adventures going up. Whether it was hanging out in the ski lodge while the boys skied all night and day, or driving the speed boat in circles as the boys went tubing or water skiing, she was always there with a smile on her face, and words of encouragement when they fell down. She lived every moment to its absolute potential, always appreciating the positive side to any situation. Kathy adored her three grandsons and enjoyed time at the lake swimming, blueberry picking, and having many bonfires with cozy snuggles.

Kathy and Jon will be remembered with a private celebration of their lives at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital Foundation.
