Luz del Alba Sklark passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on January 11, 2026.
She was born in Veracruz, Mexico, a city 250 miles east of Mexico City, to her parents, Santiago and Joaquina. She had one brother, Jimmy. All have preceded her in death.
Luz's life was defined by hard work, devotion, and deep involvement in her community.
In 1962, she met her husband, Norbert Sklark, and the two were married in Mexico City in 1963. Shortly thereafter, they returned to live in Gaylord, Michigan-a move that brought significant changes in language, culture, and environment. Luz embraced these challenges, building a successful and meaningful life in her adopted home. She and Norbert would share 62 years of marriage.
Luz began working in the Accounting Department at Standard Products in 1964 and continued until 1968, when she took time off to raise her children, Edward and Susan. She returned to Standard Products in 1977 and retired in 2005 at the age of 64, completing a total of 33 years of loyal service.
She was deeply committed to her community. Luz joined the MSU Happy Homemakers group in 1969, where she formed many lasting friendships. Through her lifelong dedication, she remained an MSU Extension member for 56 years. In addition, Luz was an Avon representative from 1982 until December 2025- marking 43 years of service to her customers and community. Mom was passionate about Michigan State football and basketball, attending a handful of games and even a seminar where Tom Izzo was the keynote speaker.
Luz was a faithful Catholic, deeply committed to her family and the life she built in Gaylord, while remaining proud of her Mexican roots and maintaining close ties with family in Mexico throughout her life.
Luz is survived by her loving husband, Norbert; and her children, Edward (Ana) and Susan (Diniz).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at St. Mary's Cathedral. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with pastries, donuts, and coffee served before the service. Please share your memories and personal messages with the family on the guestbook below.
