Marvin K Blackett

Marvin K. Blackett, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord at age 87. Born in Detroit on December 14, 1925, Marvin was the son of Norman and Ruth (Schuchard) Blackett. He attended Romeo High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving his country in the South Pacific from 1943-1946. Marvin returned to Romeo and on November 6, 1948, he married Rosalie VanKoughnett at the Romeo Congregational Church. Marvin and Rosalie were the owners of Marv Blackett Romeo Florist from 1948-1982, a floral business they grew themselves. They worked many long hours side by side. They enjoyed serving their loyal customers and took pride in being an important part of the Romeo business community for many years. A drummer from the age of 7, Marvin played Big Band, Polka and later Dixieland music with bands throughout Michigan from 1932 until 2000. He was a member of VFW Post #2052 in Romeo, the Romeo Masonic Lodge and Romeo Kiwanis where he served as club secretary. In Romeo Marvin was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he sang bass in the choir. After retiring, Marvin and Rosalie traveled the U.S. before building their lakeside home at Sugar Springs, Gladwin in 1992. He and Rosalie became members of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He continued his love for plants and flowers by gardening, and further developed his artistic side by painting colorful sea and landscapes in his later years. They moved to Gaylord earlier this year. Marvin is survived by Rosalie, his wife of almost 65 years; twin daughters, Barbara (James) Kurbel of Gaylord and Debra (Kent) Uygur of Rochester Hills; a son, Scott Blackett of Troy and a grandson, Adam Blackett. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wilbert Blackett. A memorial service for Marvin will be held Saturday, October 26, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 600 South M-18 in Gladwin with the Rev. David Sprang officiating. Visitation will start at 11:00 a.m. followed by the memorial service at noon. A luncheon will follow.
