Melvin L Slagel

Melvin L. Slagel, 62 of Johannesburg, died at home on Monday, December 2, 2013. Born in Trout Lake, Michigan, Mel was the son of Lewis and Ruth (Smith) Slagel. He was a 1969 graduate of Gaylord High School. Mel had worked as a custodian at Gaylord High School, at Best Gas, Ferrell Gas, Petrolane, Jervis B. Webb and Heartland. He enjoyed his work at Alpena Paving and will be remembered for the many jobs he did there. More recently Mel had been working with Duraseal doing asphalt seal coating. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, baking and cooking and watching western television shows. He especially enjoyed family gatherings including his annual Fourth of July parties. Mel is survived by his children, Olivia Slagel and Douglas (Shelly) Slagel of Gaylord; granddaughters, Aloria, Kaitlyn and Emily Slagel all of Gaylord; his brother, Gordon (Diane) Slagel of Gaylord and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mel’s family will receive friends at Gaylord Community Funeral Home, 850 North Center Avenue, from 4:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, December 5, 2013 where funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 6, 2013. Pastor Steve Scheer will officiate. Interment will be at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Vanderbilt. Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County Animal Shelter through Gaylord Community Funeral Home, P.O. Box 249, Gaylord, MI 49734.
