Naomi Jane Smith

Naomi Jane Smith, 87 of Gaylord, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at home.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on August 8, 1938, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Andrews) Costie. Naomi grew up in Roseville and was a graduate of Fitzgerald High School in Warren.

Naomi was a woman of strong faith and she enjoyed attending Gaylord E-Free Church.

She was a long time State of Michigan employee, working for the Deptartment of Human Services.

In her spare time, Naomi enjoyed spending time with her family. She was an avid crafter, enjoying quilting, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She also enjoyed traveling with her friends. She was a sports fan, and especially a fan of the Detroit Tigers. Her family and friends will remember her intellect and her good sense of humor.

Naomi is survived by her children, Donald Smith, James Smith, and Jeanette Smith, all of Gaylord, and Linda (David) Bose of Metamora; grandchildren, Paula Huston, Renee Berchiolly, Michael (Heather) Loren, Monica (Robert Stevens) Loren, Donald (Amy) Mellinger, and Taylor Smith; and 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Robert Costie; a sister, Grace (Richard) Lambert; and several nieces and nephews.

Naomi was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Sidney and Thomas Costie; a sister, Margaret Pettinato; and grandchildren, Tracy Smith, James Smith, and Jason Loren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, May 15, 2026, at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service, where visitation with the family will begin at 11:30 AM. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospice.
