Ralph J. Holewinski

Ralph J. Holewinski, a lifelong farmer and Gaylord resident, passed away peacefully at his family home in Gaylord, Michigan, on November 12, 2025, with his devoted wife, Rosemary, and their children by his side. Born on October 4, 1945, in Gaylord, Ralph dedicated his life to his family, faith and farming.

A graduate of Gaylord St. Mary Cathedral School in 1963, Ralph furthered his education by obtaining a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Michigan State University. His career was marked by hard work and commitment; he is best remembered for his roles at Farmer Pete’s and Ward Lake Energy, as well as his time as a custodian for Gaylord Community Schools. Ralph had a passion for planting trees across Michigan and processing beef, contributing immensely to his community's agricultural landscape.

Ralph's personality shone through in his many roles as a mentor and coach. He had an innate ability to teach and inspire, touching countless lives through his dedication to coaching little league baseball and serving as a 4-H leader. His love for teaching was evident to all who crossed his path, and he strived to instill the values of teamwork and collaboration in the younger generation, demonstrating that work can also bring joy.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Ralph was deeply involved in several organizations, including the FFA, Farm Bureau, Otsego County Soil Conservation, and the Otsego County Fair Board. He played a crucial role in restarting the fair parade, creating lasting memories for families and participants alike.

Ralph cherished his family above all else. He married the love of his life, Rosemary Russell, on May 22, 1971, at Guardian Angel Church in Detroit. Together, they enjoyed a life filled with adventure, from horseback riding and swimming to unforgettable times spent at the Russell cottage on Big Lake. He took great pride in raising their four wonderful children, instilling in them the values of hard work and community.

One of Ralph's proudest accomplishments was helping his uncle Joe bring a cabin to the family property, a project that became the heart of what the younger generation would come to know and love as the family hunting camp.

Ralph leaves behind a rich legacy of hard work and an enduring love for his family. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Rosemary of 54 years; children, Russell (Julie) Holewinski, Rosemarie (James) Davis, Rachel ("Bill") DeGroot; grandchildren, Lance, Makayla, Stephanie, and Anthony Pristavok, Holly, Zach, and Bella Holewinski, Rose "Libby", Blake, and Reagen Davis, Raeann and Parker DeGroot; siblings, Delores Kuenthal, and William (Christine) Holewinski; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
