Stephen J. Snyder

Stephen J. Snyder, 88 of Pellston, passed away Friday, August 14, 2026 at McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey.

Born March 24, 1938 in Anderson, Indiana, he was the son of Herman J. and Doris E. (Brockmyer) Snyder. Steve grew up with his parents and four brothers in Anderson where he graduated from St. Mary Catholic High School.

Steve served in the U.S. Army. There, he received training and became a master chef, often cooking for high ranking officers. After being discharged and returning home, he worked as a chef for a time in Anderson.

Steve went on to attend Xavier University in Cincinnati where he played baseball and earned a bachelor's degree.

After Steve married his wife Ruth Ann, he joined the Bell Telephone System, working for Indiana Bell. In the mid 1970's he and his family moved to New Jersey for several years where Steve worked for AT&T in telephone book advertising. Later, they moved to Troy, Michigan where, during the breakup of the Bell Telephone System, Steve and a partner started DSIC, selling telephone book advertising, primarily to automobile dealerships.

Over many years, Steve and his family spent summer vacations at Douglas Lake near Pellston; it was a place the whole family loved. Steve and Ruth Ann eventually purchased a home on the lake, and retired there in 1997.

Throughout his life, Steve lived his Catholic faith, which was so important to him. He loved all of his family and he enjoyed spending time with them, especially his grandchildren, with whom he had a special bond. He loved Christmas and always looked forward to celebrating the season with his family and friends. Always very social, Steve enjoyed entertaining others, many of whom will remember his outgoing personality and generous spirit.

He enjoyed many activities which included playing golf, boating, travel, and cooking for others. He was also a sports fan, particularly enjoyed college basketball and football.

Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann. He later married his wife, Sandra, who also passed away, in 2019. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Doris Snyder; brothers, James and John Snyder; and sisters-in-law, Becky Snyder and Marcia Snyder.

He is survived by his companion, Patricia Newstedt; his daughters, Mary Catherine (David) Crumlich of Columbia, SC and Elizabeth (Michael Boye) Snyder of Cape Coral, FL; grandchildren, Zachary (Maddy) Crumlich, Noah Crumlich, James Boye, and Emily Herrberg; brothers, Thomas (Bobbette) Snyder of Anderson, IN, and William (Elaine) Snyder of Indianapolis; sisters-in-law, Judy Snyder and Kathy Sromek; and several nieces and nephews.
