Mary E. Zofchak

Mary E. Zofchak, age 92, formerly of Flushing, MI, passed away at Independence Village of Petoskey on January 26, 2020.

Mary was born on April 24, 1927 in Flint, MI to parents Peter and Susan (Lazorchak) Trosko, the youngest of ten children.  She graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1945, and pursued a career in the business/secretarial field.

On September 17, 1949 Mary was united in marriage to the love of her life, Joseph Zofchak, at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Flint, Michigan, and they spent 70 happy years together before Joe’s passing on November 19, 2019.  They raised two children in Flint and Flushing, MI, living there until 2012 when they moved to Petoskey, MI.

A working mother at a time when it was the exception rather than the rule, Mary balanced family, career, and home with precision and love.  She took pride in her Slovak heritage, cooking and baking the traditional foods and breads of the culture until well into her ninth decade.

Family was of utmost importance to Mary, and she cherished those ties, both immediate and extended.  She related many fond memories of times spent with brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.  She was especially proud of her grandchildren.

Surviving Mary are daughter Susan Fowler (Rick) of Harbor Springs, son Joseph M. Zofchak (Lisa) of Ann Arbor, grandchildren Alexandra Braddock (Cam) of Indian River, Eric Fowler (fiancé Nicole) of Brooklyn, NY, Jonathan Zofchak, Robert Zofchak and Sarah Zofchak of Ann Arbor, and great granddaughter Marlowe Braddock.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Joseph Zofchak, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Flushing, MI in the spring.  Any memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Little Traverse Bay, or to a charity of choice.
